Superior equipment for the production of ID documents

At TRUSTECH 2017, Cannes (28.11. – 30.11.2017), MELZER will present its solutions for the production of high-end ID documents.
MELZER’s unique Inline Production System (IPS) fully automatically integrates DOVIDs, windows and other state-of-the-art security elements to produce MRTDs, such as national identity cards, border crossing cards and data pages for electronic passports.

Integrating roll stock and sheet materials, MELZER’s production equipment laminates multiple layers of polycarbonate and other advanced materials. The patented lamination process takes only 20–30 seconds at 175–200 °C, ensuring that RFID inlays, special inks, DOVIDs and security threads are successfully incorporated into the document.

MELZER also offers revolutionary RFID inlay production equipment for ID cards, passport data pages and e-covers. MELZER’s modular approach enables the manufacturing of ID documents that exceed international standards and that possesses unique characteristics setting them apart from comparable documents and conventional production processes.

MELZER's RFID Converting Line with Outstanding Performance

With up to 60,000 products/h this machine is specifically designed for industrial production of small sized RFID labels like required for alcohol brand protection, pharmaceutical fraud protection, vehicle identification and other high quality mass applications . Due to the fact that only 100% functional and tested products are suitable for these applications, MELZER´s patented inline selection is a must for cost-efficient production. The growing complexity of label structures and sensitive materials requires a smooth and controlled production process. At Cartes & IDentification 2012, Paris (6 - 8 November 2012) MELZER demonstrated a high-speed production for low-cost RFID plastic cards, which is quite different from the established MELZER solution for MRTD production.

New Standard in Inlay Production for ID Documents - presented on Cartes 2011

At Cartes & IDentification 2011, Paris  (15-17 November 2011) MELZER demonstrated the advanced inlay production line M4. The inlays produced include compensation foil and can subsequently be processed on our fully automatic lamination line for industrial production of e-NID cards in ID-1 format or passports.

RFID Research Project

On 23 February 2010 the start-up meeting for the research project "Development of Modular In-Mould Transponders (MIT)" took place in Neumünster, Germany. This project has been launched at the beginning of 2010.
It’s target: Until the end of October 2011 the participating partners intend to develop RFID transponders for use in injection-moulded plastic. By the inseparable integration of the identification chips and their antennae in reusable plastic boxes, RFID-based logistics shall be made more reliable in pool systems than they are when using attached smart labels.

World Exposition focusses on RFID
After the successful deployment of RFID-Tickets during the Olympic Games 2008 in China the next big application approaches. As of 1 May 2010 Shanghai will be in the public eye. Themed „Better City, Better Life“ the World Exposition will take place here from 1 May to 31 October 2010. Millions will come and attend this event that, by the way, for the first time ever is being held in China.

10 Layers and more
In the field of ECC, e-NID and e-driver licence highest standards are set in respect to material, security technology, personalization, long-life cycle etc. This increasingly features PC as durable and laserable material. Of course prelams and printed materials come in sheets.
However, in order to match the ISO thickness of the documents in total, the additional foils used have to be much thinner. Partially such thin PC-foils even have a printed security feature. The biggest problem though is the collation with sheets in synchronized speed.

CLI/MLI - Precision is the key
Many of the MRTDs, ECCs, e-NIDs etc. have a CLI or MLI as additional security feature. Additional means that various security features may be applied to both sides of the documents (like CLI/MLI or micro lettering/latent image). No matter how many security features are finally selected, it is important that all features are precisely applied and match the front and backside print image. All these features consisting of different materials like PC-foils, holograms, kinegrams, threads etc. need to fit to each other and have to be positioned along with the prelam. This is almost impossible when using a traditional production process with sheet laminators.

In the near future, Germany and many other European counties will implement Electronic National ID Cards as a result of the "Schengen" Treaty.

RFID was the Gold-Winner of the Olympic Games 2008 in Beijing
One of the most important features for Olympia was that the tickets were counterfeit-proof. The World Cup Soccer in France showed how disastrous an event can be when tickets are easily forged. The solution to stop counterfeiting is RFID which can carry important information such as event, date, as well as seat number and cannot be easily duplicated. There are various manufacturing aspects that help make an e-ticket counterfeit-proof. Three important aspects that Melzer pays very close attention to are chip, material handling and testing procedures. As the chip stands out from the rest of the ticket, the machine surrounds it with a compensation layer so that the chip cannot be found or intentionally destroyed. An additional benefit of this process is that tickets run through the mechanical personalization process more smoothly.
